Ultra Green Villas are built using recycled containers that have been refurbished and prepared by the factory. They are 40’x8’x9’ containers laid side-by-side and/or stacked in multiple configurations to create attractive, secure, and environmentally friendly homes starting from 350 sq. ft. The recycled shipping containers are “ready-made” building blocks, structurally sound and built for transport. EcoTecture is currently in the process of designing, engineering and building 2 prototype models.
Building Method
The recycled shipping containers are modified according to specification and custom fit for construction. This may include pre-cut or “punched” openings for doors, windows, and skylights, sandblasting away old paint and imperfections, and installing sidings and fixtures, plumbing and electric wiring, among other preparation work.
On the siding of an UltraGreen Villa, the factory can use Supertherm Insulative Coating, or related product, which is sprayed on both sides of the container walls. Supertherm is a high-performance, four-part ceramic coating that carries an R value of R19 and adheres to the steel surface of the shipping container and has a 30-40 year life-span.
Inside, a ½ inch plywood floor will be installed over the existing ¾ inch plywood sub-floor. Wiring along the walls and vertical support beams can be used with drywall and metal studs to create the interior partition walls. Once insulated, the existing container walls are prepared for finishing. Cabinets and counter-tops may be installed and appliances and other fixtures are secured for shipping.
On-site Installation
When the EcoTecture containers arrive on-site, they are hoisted onto the foundation, slab, or footers, and then connected and welded in place. These steel containers are designed to hold a load of 57,000 lbs each and can be stacked more than 8 high. Once secured, each container is welded to the one above, below, or adjacent. The end result is a single, immensely strong structure that can be built and secured in as little as 4 hours.
The exterior can be coated with fiber-cement siding or a spray-on stucco and finished and painted. This will add beauty and dimension to the containers outer walls, transforming them from a used shipping container into an UltraGreen Villa. Windows and sliding glass doors are installed into the pre-cut openings and doors are hung. Water and electricity are hooked up and touch up paint is applied as needed. Finally, steel security roll-up doors are re-fitted and the UltraGreen Villa is ready for occupation.
